CAREER OPTIONS

Civil engineering

RKC builds some of the most exhilarating and inspiring engineering projects within the industry. As a civil engineer  you will be part of a project team charged with ensuring that the design and specifications meet the client’s  requirements, and that these high standards are implemented correctly during the construction of the project. You  will have direct responsibility for the management and delivery of a section of the project and as you gain  experience, the size and complexity of the section will naturally increase.

If you are starting out in your career as a civil engineer, you will be overcoming the challenges that our complex projects encounter on a daily basis. This time allows you to experience the dynamic site environment learning the methods and techniques of how we construct our projects and will enable you to call upon this experience throughout the rest of your career.

Our best civil engineering graduates progress to senior positions within the business such as Engineering Leader or Project Director. Being part of the project team provides the camaraderie and support to enable us to be part of how we shape our infrastructure for the future.

RKC also expects that you will become a Chartered Civil Engineer and provides generous support to assist you in achieving this.

Planning

Planning is a multi-skilled career path, which gives you exposure to the whole life cycle of a project from inception  through to project handover and facilities management. Planners get involved with the entire project team and  develop the overall time scale for the project using project management software which deliver detailed  programmes together with a comprehensive suite of performance measures and associated project controls.  Planners have a fundamental role on the successful delivery on all of our projects.

You will gain a working knowledge of construction techniques, sequences, methodologies and processes on live  RKC projects. This will involve progress measurement on live projects, maintaining programmes and other time  related materials, which will facilitate performance measurement through robust project controls and accurate  reporting and forecasting.

This discipline is ideal for you if you are highly organized and methodical and can work with people at all levels of  the business. We will work closely with you to develop clear career goals, expand your skills and assist you in  working towards the relevant chartership. As a planner the expectation is that you will work towards becoming a  chartered member of the Institute of Building.

As part of the Planning function, you will closely interface with all project stakeholders from clients, designers  through to supply chain partners as well as our direct workforce.

Procurement & commercial management

There are two main functions within Procurement; Operational and Strategic. As an Operational Buyer, you will  play a key role within the project team; working with the Engineering and Design team to identify and create  packages of work into the market to tender, where you will co-ordinate with the Supply Chain, Project Team and  Consultants to ensure that Sub-Contracts are let at the best possible quality at the best possible price to promote  added value across the project.

As a Strategic buyer, you play a more central role for the whole function; reviewing & maintaining all group Preferred Supplier Agreements and Strategic Manufacturing Agreements. The Strategic buyer team also manages  the Supply Chain Tier process, Performance Management, IT Procurement along with other financial  administration.

The business constructs a wide range of projects over a number of different sectors and it is the responsibility of the Procurement Department to identify and deliver RKC’s key initiatives through the Supply Chain, as they are the main interaction between the Supply Chain and RKC before a contract is awarded.

The work required does not only cover the scope of construction works, but also to encourage that the Supply  Chain will perform to the highest standards of Health and Safety, Quality, Sustainability, for example, as set by us. This ensures that the commercial aspirations of the project are realized and provides the best possible value to the  business.

Procurement’s role requires interaction with the Planning function to ensure packages are secured in line with the project programme; the Design team to ensure that the Supply Chain fully understand the scope and design of the work required of them; and the Commercial function to fully understand the costs that have been allocated to that particular work.

Having Procurement as an integrated part of the project team, realises the technical and innovative potential that the supply chain can reach and form the right relationship. This ensures that the most collaborative work takes place once the subcontract has been awarded. Department members also ensure the most strategic relationships  are secured with the top members of our supply chain, to only secure project stability and long-term business stability.
